oh yeah, i entered last year
There will be blood.
You open the card, and the paper cuts your fingertip.
A bead of blood wells up. You wipe it across the white of the inner page, and it soaks in—a small red stain. Like the lake.
Only one line there:
“The past always comes back.”
Then you realize it’s not white paper. It’s cream, very pale, very old. Something pressed into the pulp, close to the fibers. A feather. Black. Curled. Edges singed.
You turn back a page.
Laura’s handwriting.
“Dear—”
No name. A large inkblot, like water spilled. Or tears.
“I saw him in the lake again today. He was standing in the reeds, wearing the deer skull mask, just watching me. I should be afraid, but I’m not. The water of Rusty Lake is always cold, but his eyes are warm. Do you know that deer shed their antlers every year? The old ones fall off, and new ones grow. I want to forget you, like a deer forgets its horns.”
“But I can’t.”
The next sentence is scratched out, the paper torn. You hold it up to the light. A few words surface:
“Stay.”
“Sacrifice.”
“Forgive me.”
The last page holds one sentence only. Typewritten, the letters pressed deep into the grain:
“Some people have to sink to the bottom of the lake, so that others can rise to breathe.”
You remember those sacrificed in the game. They sank into Rusty Lake, their memories turning into black cubes, their bodies becoming silt at the bottom. You thought it was fiction.
But this card—it smells like lake water. Not ink, not old paper. Real lake water. Cold, heavy with rotting weeds.
You close the card.
Your fingertip still bleeds.
You remember this day last year. Someone gave you a white-striped calathea. You said you’d kill it. She said it didn’t matter.
The calathea is dead now. In the pot, buried in dry soil, a rusted key.
You walk to the window.
There is no lake outside.
But you hear the water.
brilliant and hilarious as always!
“you must be a nut driver because i’ve been driven nuts, for you”… maybe next year
of course, i only come up with this 4 days after the end of the contest. im guessing itll be held again tho 🤞
please please you know i want a new game
well servant of the lake is coming soon in any case
